CASTOR

M, 5 1/2 month

Gender: Male
Age: 5

months (approx. DOB 9/21/2017)
Size/Weight: 33 lbs
Color: Reddish Brown
Breed: English Setter Mix (ES mom; unknown dad)

Good with Children: There are no children in Castors foster home, but he gets along well with everyone, so I think he would be fine with kids.

He does still jump up a bit, so he would need to be closely supervised with little ones.

Good with Dogs: Yes. Castor loves other dogs.

He is very friendly and enjoys playing and cuddling with his setter foster siblings.

Good with Cats: Unknown.

There are no cats in Castors foster home.

He has not displayed a significant prey drive and is young, so he could probably learn to live well with cats, but introductions should be made carefully.

House trained: Yes. Castor has not had any accidents in his foster home.

He keeps his crate clean as well.

Crate trained: Yes. Castor will not volunteer to go in the crate, but he can be enticed in with a treat and will settle calmly once inside.

Leash trained: Somewhat.

Castor has a very big yard in his foster home and a lot of furry siblings, so we have not worked a lot on leash-walking.

He tends to stick pretty close beside you though, so I think he will learn to leash walk quickly with some practice.

Activity Level: Moderate.

Castor likes to play with his siblings and romp in the yard like any young pup, but he is happy to go outside for a bit, then come in for a cuddle.

He needs to get exercise and stimulation, but he does not require hours of running or intense activity like some setters.

Fence: Preferred.

A fenced yard is always preferred, but Castor is calmer than many setters and would probably be ok with multiple long walks, hikes and other activities with his family.

Training/Behavior: Castor has only been in his foster home for 2.5 weeks at the time of posting, so we have not done a lot of training with him yet.

He learned immediately not to potty in the house, and he is pretty good at coming when called.

Like any puppy, he still steals and chews things when he isnt being watched, and he also jumps up on people with excitement.

He is easily corrected and wants to please

he needs to be trained with gentle and positive methods as he cringes at loud voices.

Castor is a naturally happy and friendly dog.

He is very attentive to his people, so I feel that he will learn quickly.

Like any puppy, he would benefit from an obedience class.

Medical History: Castor is UTD on all vaccinations and is on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

Castor has a loud heart murmur, and he was diagnosed with Pulmonic Stenosis.

This is a congenital heart condition which involves the narrowing of the pulmonic valve opening requiring the right ventricle to pump harder to push blood through the narrowed opening.

Castor has been evaluated by a cardiologist, and she has assessed his condition as MODERATE.

According to her written report Dogs with mild to moderate PS often do not have a reduction in their life span as a result of their heart disease, and rarely show clinical signs. At this time, I am recommending to simply monitor Castor as he grows.

No medication is indicated at this time.

She said that generally puppies diagnosed with moderate PS do not have the condition progress or worsen, but she strongly recommends doing another echocardiogram in 6-8 months to confirm there has been no change and to monitor it annually.

If his condition were to worsen, the valve can be corrected with surgery.

Any family interested in adopting Castor must be willing to have his heart rechecked by a qualified veterinarian and to undertake his surgery if it were ever become necessary.

Castor originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He was removed from Greece as a young puppy, so it is unlikely he would ever develop Leishmaniasis, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years.

Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab.

The test typically costs $120-150.

Foster Comments:

When you see Castor, you immediately think thats not a setter! but his momma is a beautiful orange belton English Setter.

We dont know what his dad is, but our best guess is a hound of some sort

perhaps a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Castor did not inherit his moms spots or pretty feathers, but he did inherit the wonderful ES temperament.

He is loving and affectionate like most ESs and is really attached to his people.

He is calmer than the typical ES puppy

while he loves to play and wrestle, he is usually the first to come back inside and jump up on the couch for a cuddle.

Castor likes to be close to his humans and wants to be touching them whenever he can.

In many ways, he is one of the easiest fosters I have ever had.

He is remarkably well behaved for a young pup.

While he still chews things occasionally and counter-surfs if given a chance, he gets into much less mischief than typical ES puppies, and I dont have to monitor him constantly. He is content to lay beside me while I work on the computer or watch TV. He sleeps quietly in his crate through the night and waits patiently to go out in the morning.

He gets along well with everyone he meets

both humans and all other dogs.

There are lots of dogs in Castors foster home and he is sweet and friendly with all of them.

This sweet boy has very quickly stolen his foster moms heart.

I am hoping he will find a wonderful family who will overlook his heart condition and want to love him forever, but he is welcome here for as long as it takes to find the perfect home.
